Vibe coding tools: which app builder to use, and when to graduate
"Vibe coding" means describing what you want in plain language and letting an AI write the code. Andrej Karpathy coined the term in February 2025, and Merriam-Webster listed it as trending slang a month later. Today there are two kinds of vibe coding tools: browser app builders that host everything for you, and coding agents that work on real code on your machine. This guide covers the first kind and tells you when to move to the second.
Describe what you want in plain language and Lovable builds it with you in real time. It also handles hosting, SSL, authentication, backend and payments.
Our take, best for: Non-developers shipping a real web product or internal tool.
Move from a browser builder to a coding agent (see our AI coding agents guide) when you need custom backend logic, you keep hitting the builder's limits, or you're paying more in credits than a coding-agent subscription costs. Before you switch, check whether your builder can sync to GitHub or export the code, so you can keep going in Cursor, Claude Code or Codex without starting over.
Checklist before you ship
Never paste secret API keys into front-end code. Keep them in the builder's secrets or environment settings.
Test sign-up, login and password reset yourself, using a second account.
Check who can read and write each database table before real users arrive.
Connect or export to GitHub early so you have history and a backup.
Ask the AI to explain any code that handles money, auth or personal data, and read the answer.
Building software by describing what you want in natural language and letting an AI model generate the code, often without reading every line. Andrej Karpathy coined the term in February 2025.
What's the best vibe coding tool for beginners?
Our take: start with a browser builder (Lovable, Bolt, v0 or Replit) because hosting is handled for you. Pick by output: Rork for mobile apps, v0 for polished web UI, Lovable or Base44 for full apps with logins and data.
Is vibe-coded software safe to launch?
It can be, but only if you review it like any other code: secrets, authentication and database permissions especially. Use the checklist on this page before real users sign up.
How we write these: each tool description is based on the tool's own site or docs (linked as Source) and checked on the date above. "Our take" lines are our opinion. Something out of date? Email hello@hotfixdaily.com. No tool paid to be listed.
